Judge Stadtfeld was born on August 12, 1861, in New York City. He later relocated to Pittsburgh, where he attended public schools. Judge Stadtfeld was admitted to the bar of Allegheny County in 1886 and thereafter engaged in private practice. Judge Stadtfeld was appointed to the Superior Court in 1931 and served until his death on December 12, 1943.

During his career, Judge Stadtfeld served as president of the Allegheny County Bar Association (1927-29), director of Kaufmann’s Department Stores, and member of the Concordia Club.
