Judge Donald E. Wieand was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on September 18, 1926. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. Judge Wieand graduated from Villanova University in 1948, then later as first in his class at Dickinson Law School.
In 1951, Judge Wieand was admitted to the Lehigh County Bar and joined private practice. In just two years, he became a partner at Butz, Hudders, Tallman, & Wieand. After a decade with the firm, Judge Wieand was elected to the Court of Common Pleas of Lehigh County. He served until 1978, when he was appointed to the Superior Court. Elected to a full term in 1981, Judge Wieand remained on the Superior Court until he passed away in 1996 at 69 years old.
Judge Wieand received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Dickinson Law School in 1990. Additionally, Muhlenberg College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1992. Judge Wieand was highly engaged in his community: he served as president of the board of directors for both the Pennsylvania State Young Men’s Christian Association and its Allentown branch, and he was on the advisory board for the Allentown Salvation Army.
