Judge Gunther was born in Hastings, Cambria County, on June 20, 1903. He attended Kanty Preparatory School and received his LL.B. from Duquesne University. Judge Gunther began his legal career in private practice in Allegheny County. From 1935 to 1938, he served as Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania.
In 1942, Judge Gunther was appointed to the Allegheny County Court. He was then appointed to the Superior Court in 1950 and served until 1961 after being defeated in his reelection bid. Judge Gunther became an Allegheny County Commissioner in 1964.
Other positions and memberships he held included trustee of Alliance College; the Polish National Alliance; president of the National Confederation of American Ethnic Groups; founder and director of the Committee to Stop World Communism; national chairman of the American Resettlement Committee for Displaced Persons; and member of the Rotary, Elks, Moose, and the Civic Club of Allegheny County.
