Biography
Justice Seamus P. McCaffery was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He began his career by joining the United States Marine Corps, and after his active duty he served in the Marine Corps Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain. He then transferred to the United States Air Force Reserve where he served as a commanding officer and eventually became Colonel. Justice McCaffery later joined the Philadelphia Police Department, where he served as a detective, patrolman, and plainclothes vice/narcotics investigator, and as a member of the Major Crimes and Homicide Divisions. While serving with the Department, he earned his bachelor’s degree from La Salle University and his Juris Doctor from Temple University School of Law.
Justice McCaffery first worked as a litigation associate at a Philadelphia law firm and before being elected as a Municipal Court judge in Philadelphia. In this time, he achieved numerous accomplishments including his appearances on numerous renowned television programs and radio talk shows. Judge McCaffery also created the first National Football League Courtroom, the “Eagles Court” was held at each home game at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. In 2001, he was appointed Administrative Judge of the Philadelphia Municipal Court by the Supreme Court. Two years later, he was elected to the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. He successfully ran for the Supreme Court in 2007. He later concluded his judicial service in 2014 when he retired.
