Biography

Chief Justice Emeritus Thomas G. Saylor served on the Superior Court of Pennsylvania from 1993 to 1997. He began his service on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania January 1, 1997 and became Chief Justice in 2015. He retired from the Supreme Court on December 31, 2021.

CJE Saylor earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1969, and later his law degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1972. He started his legal career as a prosecutor in Somerset County in 1972. He was later appointed First Deputy Attorney General for Pennsylvania in 1983, a position he held until 1987.

Upon his retirement from the Supreme Court, CJE Saylor was appointed to the newly created post of Judicial Scholar-in-Residence at the Thomas R. Kline Center for Judicial Education of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law at Duquesne University, a position that he still holds. His responsibilities include development of “substantive and skill-based courses that meet the needs of Pennsylvania’s more than 500 trial and appellate jurists,” according to the Kline Center.
